How Do I Maintain My Air Conditioner

Both residential and commercial air conditioning needs proper maintenance to ensure that it can run efficiently for longer. We always recommend contacting your local air conditioning company for advice and consultation in regards to air con maintenance.

Air Conditioning Filters

Maintaining the health of the filters is the most important step in keeping the aircon working properly. Cleaning the current filters or replacing them regularly will assist in their efficiency and longevity. Dirty and clogged filters will prevent correct airflow within the system. A reduced airflow will mean the system will work harder but not provide the best air comfort.

A dirty or clogged filter can also impact the evaporator coil and influence its ability to absorb heat. Replacing the dirty filter can increase the system’s energy efficiency from 5% to 15%.

Central air conditioners will often have the filter located in the wall, furnaces, ceilings or within the aircon unit. A split system will have the fitler exposed through the grill and is often easy to find. The filter can be either replaceable or reusable while each system will need its specific filter type. Residential air filters needs to be cleaned once a year and commercial can range from once month to every 6 months depending on usage. If the home or workspace is more likely to have dust or there are pets with fur then this will also increase the need to inspect the filter.

Air Conditioner Coils

The evaporator coils and the condenser coils will collect dust and dirt during its lifetime. When a clean filter is within the system the coils will not soil quickly. Even though clean filters prevent dirt and dust from entering the coils, the coils will still collect dirt.

If there is a large amount of debris then the airflow is reduced and the coils are insulated. This means that the coils will have to work harder to absorb heat.

Every year the coils should be inspected if they have dust on them and cleaned to ensure they work correctly. Dirt and dust will be easy to see on the coils which will indicate they need a clean. Also, it is important to do small tasks to limit the amount of dust and dirt exposed to the coils. From keeping vegetation at least a metre away from the outdoor system, allowing adequate airflow will keep the coils cleaner.

Coil Fins and Condensate Drains

A tool called a ‘fin comb’ can help comb the fins back in place if they are out. The coil fins are likely to bend and block airflow if they are ignored from receiving a service. The comb will gently push back the fins and ensure that they are in the best condition.

With condensate drains occasionally using a stiff wire to pass through the drain channels can help with clogs. The clogs are often caused from humidity which can lead to an increase in moisture and discoloured walls.

How Often Should the Aircon Be Serviced?

It is recommended that the air conditioner should be serviced at least once a year for residential and every 6 months for commercial air condtioning . This includes all types of air conditioning systems, from home cooling to both ducted and split systems. If the air conditioner is constantly used and is rarely switched off then a service will need to occur more often.

Also, if the system is an evaporative system then the service should occur twice a year. If there are any issues suspected with the aircon then a service might need to occur sooner than expected.

How Much Does it Cost to Have your Air Conditioner Serviced?

The average amount for a Sydney air conditioning service is around $140 to $220. This number will change for each person and the job type will also influence prices. The location and access of the air conditioner will alter how hard the process will also be. If there is an Air Conditioning Repair needed the price will also be influenced.
