What Are The Different Parts Of An Air Conditioning System?

An air conditioner’s parts are all incredibly important in keeping your house cool or warm during summer and winter. Air conditioning units rely on all parts to function correctly and in keeping the system efficient. A qualified technician can perform work on all air conditioner parts, including repairs and installs as it only takes one faulty part to damage your ac. Here at Logicool Air, our technicians perform one of Sydney’s highest-rated Air Conditioning Services on a wide variety of systems daily.

The main air conditioner parts within most air conditioning systems are:

  • Refrigerant – coolant liquid which is used to cool air down
  • Air Handler and Blowing Units – gathers air from the room or outside to bring it to the aircon. It also blows out the cool air while dispersing any additional heat out of the unit
  • Compressor – the engine of the air conditioner which converts the refrigerant to high-pressure gas
  • Condenser Coil – cools down the high-pressure air transforming it back to liquid
  • Expansion Valve – further cools down the heated refrigerant liquid before passing through the evaporator coils
  • Evaporator Coil – receives liquid from condenser coils and expansion valve and turns it back to gas
  • Thermostat – allows the system to manual or automatically produce specific temperatures
  • Filter – removes any contaminants from the air

These are the parts you will find in most common domestic units. However, there are a lot more parts in more complex units such as vrvs and vrfs.

What are the Main Parts Of An Aircon System?

An air conditioner works by sucking hot air from the home or inside the room to be transformed into cool air. The refrigerant is used to grab the heat from the air and is transported around the air conditioner. During this process specific pipes and systems work to turn the refrigerant into a gas, then a liquid and then back into a gas. The hot air is removed and cool air is then transported out of the aircon through vents and ducts.

Refrigerant

An important part of the cooling process of an air conditioner is the refrigerant. It is a special fluid or coolant which will work to transport indoor heat outdoors. The solution changes from a liquid to a gas to run throughout the system. When it removes the heat the indoor space will have cool air.

Air Handler and Blowing Units

These parts push the cool air around the building while drawing in air from the outside. When the aircon is a ducted air conditioning system then it will also help the air travel through the vents and ducts.

Compressor

The compressor works to turn the refrigerant liquid to gas, and from low-pressure gas to high-pressure. This will cause the temperature of the gas refrigerant to increase to then be transported to the condenser coils.

Condenser Coils

These coils are located on the outdoor unit and receive the refrigerant which has turned into a gas from the compressor. This hot refrigerant will transfer the heat into the outdoors to cool off the refrigerant. While the hot air is removed from the refrigerant it also transforms back into a liquid and cools it down.

Expansion Valve

Even though the coils have cooled down the refrigerant it needs to be further cooled before entering the evaporator coils. This is where the expansion valves are important as it will lower the pressure of the refrigerant to lower its temperature. While it does this it will turn back into gas form and enter the evaporator.

Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil gathers the heat from inside the building and uses the refrigerant to cool the air down. The gas from the expansion valve enters the evaporator coils via copper tubes. The warm air from the building will transform into cool air and be blown out of the system through the blower fan.

Thermostat

This device is used to allow people to either automatically or manually adjust the temperature of the building. The air conditioner can be set to a specific temperature where the system will produce the needed warmth or cooled air. Thermostats can have timers, set schedules and other modes depending on the model of the ac unit.

Filters

Filters are important in keeping contaminants, debris and other harmful particles from flowing within the home. They trap these and remove them from the building, allowing fresh air to enter the building. Working filters will help keep the system running more efficiently and should be replaced regularly.

Our blog ‘how often you should change your aircon filter’ describes the recommended times to replace the old ac filter.
