Why Is My Air Conditioning Leaking Water?

Air conditioning leaking is never a good sign and indicates that an air conditioning repair is needed. There are many different reasons which may lead to the air conditioner leaking water. Simple actions can help but a fully licensed technician is best to call when encountering leakages from the ac unit. Here at Logicool Air, we have over 15 years of experience repairing leaking air-cons and are the best to contact.

Air conditioners leaking water may be due to the following reasons:

  • Complications with drain lines (rusted, blocked, disconnected)
  • The condensate pump malfunctioning
  • Filters being blocked or refrigerant leaking causing the evaporator coil to freeze
  • Damaged and dirty coils with little insulation
  • Higher levels of humidity

Minimising the Damage

When water is leaking from the air con, there are simple steps to take to prevent further damage from occurring. Water spreading throughout the building can cause serious issues if left unattended for too long. Such as moulding and building structures being weakened, controlling the dilemma early is important

  1. Turning off the air conditioner is the first step which is important to do. This is important because it will stop water from flowing in the unit. Additionally, it will help with the water leaking to stop or at least be less severe.
  2. Cleaning the water/ removing it from the building is important as well. As mentioned, water can cause serious issues if it travels throughout the building and is not dealt with as soon as possible. Therefore, cleaning the floor, walls and other items in the building can limit damages, save money and prevent further concerns.
  3. Contacting a trusted air conditioning contractor to perform an aircon repair is also critical. Delaying the ac repair and service will only lead to more damage and more costs. The peace of mind knowing that the aircon works and will not leak water is better than prolonging the air conditioning repair service.

Common Issues with Leaking Air Conditioning Units

There are many issues which can lead to the air conditioner leaking water, but these ones are the concern more people often experience.

Drain Line Complications

Drain lines, or pipes, within the air conditioner can experience some difficulties that can result in the aircon leaking water. Mainly, rusted drain lines, blocked drains and poorly connected drain lines can lead to the air conditioner leaking water.

When drain lines are older and contain rust with water travelling through it the water can leak from the holes. The rust means that the system is losing its durability, which occurs after longer periods of time, and may need replacing.

Dirt and other debris building up in the drain lines can lead to a blocked drain in the system. With this, the water may not be able to flow easily, therefore leading to backflow. As a result, the backflow will need to go somewhere, and so, it will leak out of the system.

The installation of the system may have been poor with the air conditioning contractor not properly securing the drain lines. If this is true, therefore, the drain lines might be loose due to the machine vibrating when switched on. As a result, water might escape from the pipes which will cause water to leak.

If needing professional Air Conditioning Installation performed by licensed technics, our services are open to all Sydney suburbs and buildings.

Condensation Pump Not Working

When the aircon unit is located inside and on a ground floor the drain pan and condensation pump could be faulty. Otherwise meaning that the ac system does not have a gravity drain line, these two systems can be the cause for leakages. The drain pan may contain rust inside it which will result in cracks and holes forming, therefore, water leaking from them. Also, the condensate pump may break down, as a result, the pan can overflow leading to water going everywhere.

Frozen Coils

The coils freezing up can be due to either the filters becoming blocked or refrigerant leaking. As a result, the compressor can overwork if these issues are present for too long leading to costly issues. Water leaking can indicate that these concerns are happening, which will mean that replacing the unit is needed. The airflow reduced from travelling over the coils from the blocked air filter, as well as the refrigerant leaking everywhere are signs that the coils are frozen.

Dirty and Damaged Coils and Little Insulation

Coils which become full of dirt or if the insulation in the unit is little/ breaking then water can leak. This is because the condensate can be restricted to flow down into the coils then the drain as it should. Therefore, the water will be trapped by the dirt so it will drip off, rather than go past the coils. Furthermore, the water may escape through any holes in the insulation and leak out of the system.

Higher Amounts of Humid Temperatures

Simply, humid weather will result in condensation to build-up more quickly than usual. As there is more condensation which the air conditioner can remove it can mean that water will leak.

Preventing Water Leaking from Air Conditioners

It is smarter and more cost effective to prevent water from leaking than to not place actions to stop the potential dangers. If there are no preventative measures taken place before water leaks it will cause more damage, time and money than it would have been. There are some small steps which can be taken to help prevent water from possibly leaking:

  • Installing quality insulation in the unit
  • Turning the air conditioner on to work on the correct time of the day/no overworking it
  • Proper equipment and aircons will be more efficient at limiting water from leaking
  • Regular maintenance and cleaning the aircon unit at least once a month
  • Having the air conditioner serviced in the recommended time periods
