What Is Air Conditioning Zoning?

Air con zoning is where air conditioning is set up around a home or building where each area has its own temperature control. Zoning is mostly with ducted air conditioning which separate zones will be able to control the amount of air flow. The ducted systems are built specifically for zone control and can come with both heating and cooling. Logicool Air is here with our Air Conditioning Service where we will work with air con zoning.

Air con zoning is used to have each room, floor or area have its own temperature control. The ducted air conditioning system will push conditioned air into the specific room through a thermostat, ductwork and damper. Air conditioning zoning lowers running costs and offers better individual temperature control and overall comfort.

How Does Aircon Zoning Work?

Air conditioner zoning allows for individual control of what rooms receive air conditioning and what the temperature is at. It works with a central controller which connects to other thermostats around the building. This single control can control each room or place a single setting for the whole area. Each room or zone with the aircon zoning installed will have separate thermostats which can be used to switch the system on or off. The thermostat will also be used to control what the temperature for the room will be, timers can be included and other settings.

Electric dampers are installed to help control the individual temperature for each room. These dampers act as valves which are placed in certain sections around the ductwork of the ducted aircon. The amount of cold or warm air which can travel into a room is governed by the dampers. Whatever the temperature is set on the central or individual thermostat will alter how much airflow is brought into the room.

What are Air Conditioning Zones?

When air conditioning is zoned there will be different ways which a zone is created. The main zones which an air conditioning unit will be built to individually work in are:

  • Floors – at times the various floors can be at whole zoned for the air conditioning. This can include a two storey home or in office workspaces. Often higher floors will be hotter than lower floors as they are closer to the hotter roofs and because hot air rises. People may decide to have their floors split with the air conditioning. This can be because at times one floor will not be used, and the aircon would be wasted.
  • Rooms – people may choose to have specific rooms receive individual control of the air conditioning. Special rooms, such as gyms, offices to bedrooms, can have the aircon individualised for the area. Other times it can be broader with living areas and the bedrooms being individually controlled.
  • Sun-Lit Rooms – rooms inside the building which are more likely to receive large amounts of sunlight are encouraged to have their own controls. Such as rooms with large windows or skylights, these rooms become hotter more easily. The aircon can be turned on while other areas of the building can have it off or on a different temperature if needed.

What are the Benefits with Air Conditioning Zoning?

There are many benefits which come with air conditioning zoning and having it work inside the home:

  • Comfort and Ease – as each room or area can have its own control with the aircon people will be more comfortable. If one person wants to aircon on, at a specific temperature or off then each person will be comfortable. The ease of having individual control also helps with keeping certain parts of the home cooler or warmer or keeping each person positive.
  • Energy Savings – it is more energy efficient if certain areas of the home are receiving the aircon airflow rather than the whole home. With zoned aircon a person can save costs of their running aircon costs as there will be fewer rooms the air conditioning needs to work in. Wasted aircon air is also avoidable as specific rooms will be used when the aircon is working.

What are Some Disadvantages with Aircon Zoning?

Even though the benefits with air con zoning are great there are some set backs as well:

  • More Expensive Installations – zoned ducted air conditioning is more expensive when compared to regular ducted aircon. This is because additional programming, installations and labour are needed with the zones. Different parts will also be required to have the zoning work and the thermostats and other parts will all needed to be connected. Even though it is more expensive to install the running costs of zoned ducted ac is less when compared to regular ducted aircon.
  • Air Loss – there can be some ductwork in the zoned aircon which will have the air escape and be wasted. If the system is not correctly installed then air will flow more easily through the dampers and can nullify the use of zoned ac.

To know more about how much ducted aircon installation can cost we encourage you to read our blog for further details.
