What is Air Con Gas or Refrigerant?

Aircon gas, otherwise called refrigerant, is what will trap the air from the outside and turn it into cold air. It is mostly in a gaseous or fluid state which absorbs heat and is used to provide cool air or refrigeration. Refrigerant is one of the most important parts of an air conditioner as it is what creates the cool air. 

It will absorb the warmer air which has been gathered into the indoor unit and will transform between a liquid and a gas. What are the Different Types of Air Conditioning Gases?

There are four types of air conditioning gases which can be used inside an air conditioner:

• R22 – this type of refrigerant is not as hazardous for the environment as R12 but has begun to be not in use and will no longer be made.
• R410 – this air con gas replaces R22 due to being safer for the environment and also better for the air conditioning system. 
• R32 – this refrigerant is the most energy efficient and safest for the environment while being effective and refrigerating warm air.

What is Aircon Re-Gassing?

Re-gassing in air conditioning is when the refrigerant is refilled inside the aircon system. As this gas is what will cool the air it is extremely important that enough gas is working in the unit. If there is too little of the air con gas then the system will start to push our warm air instead of cool. Only a fully qualified aircon technician should re-gas the system as they will know how to handle the gas and refill the unit correctly. 

How Often Should Air Conditioners Be Re-Gased?

Most air conditioning systems will be fine running on the same refrigerant for on average 10 years. If the system is constantly used then the gas might need to be refilled sooner. If the air conditioner is rarely used or not as often then the refill might not need to occur as often. Most cases the system might not need a refill for that long as the refrigerant is designed to last.

A refill will most likely only occur if there has been a gas leak with the system or any other major issues. An air conditioning maintenance task will help notice these issues early and for a technician to address them before major problems arise. 

How Will I Know if My Aircon Needs Re-Gasing?

It is important that the air conditioner is full of the right amount of refrigerant to keep it efficient and pursue cool air effectively. If re-gasing does not occur then the system can be weekend, damage and energy costs can rise. Here are the main signs to look out for to know if the system needs to be re-gased:

• Warm Air – if warm air blows out of the system when it should be cold then this is a good sign that the refrigerant level is low. A leakage might be the main reason why the system is producing warm air as there is no gas to transform it into cool air. 
• Ice – if there is an ice build-up on the aircon unit then the gas might be low levelled. From ice building up on the refrigerant lines to anywhere else on the system, this is a sign of low air con gas. 
• Distribution Issues – if the air distributed out of the aircon is not proper then the gas levels might be low. Such as if one corner of the area is colder than the others, the aircon unit might be low on its gas levels. 
• Higher Electricity Bill – if there has been a sudden rise in the electricity bill then this can be due to the refrigerant leak. The less aircon gas there is means the system will have to work harder in converting the warmer air into cool air. This leads to more electricity and energy being consumed and the overall bill to rise. 
• Longer Cooling Times – low refrigerant can cause the system to be slower in how efficiently it cools the room.
• Smells and Odors – odd smells and odours which come from the aircon is a sign that the refrigerant levels might be lower than it should.
