Commercial buildings, such as offices should have their filter replaced every 1-12 months. If your system runs all day while there are multiple people in the building. This will mean your filter will need to be replaced more frequently.

What are Some Factors Influencing How Often I Should Change the Filter?

There are many different factors which will affect how often you will need to change your air conditioning filter:

• Pets – shedding of pet fur can mean that your filters will become more blocked more frequently. The more pets in the building means the more often your filters will need replacing, at least every 2 months. 
• Frequency – the more your aircon is used means that the more often filters will need replacing. If your system is used rarely then a filter can last several months and up to a year. But if the unit is constantly in use then every 1-2 months is when the system should be replaced. 
• Size – the larger the building means that the system will need to work harder to keep constant air quality. At the same time, smaller aircons will have smaller filters which also means that they will need replacing more often. 
• Allergies or Asthma – if there are people who work or live in a building with respiratory problems then the filter will need to be replaced every 6 weeks. 

How do I know if my Air Con Filter Needs Changing?

The more common signs that your filter needs replacing are:

• Dust – if there is more dust in the building than usual then the filter might not be properly performing.
• Grey Coloured Filter – a build up of dust and other contaminants will mean that the filter will become grey in colour. 
• Higher Energy Bills – a clogged filter will mean the unit will have to work harder and use more energy. This could be the reason why the aircon is costing more to run.

Can I Run My AC Without a Filter?

It is highly recommended that the air conditioner has a working filtered installed at all times. It is not good to have no aircon filter installed in the system for many reasons, including:

• Condensate Drain Problems – the condensate drain works to remove the moisture and condensation from the aircon. Without a filter, this system will not be able to correctly function as dirt and debris will block the condensate. Water leakage problems are common if this occurs. 
• Poor Air Quality – the indoor unit will not properly remove contaminants from the air which will lead to poorer air quality. From mould to dust or animal fur, the room will not have these removed and people will breathe them in. 
• Freon Tube Issues – these copper pipes are constantly wet so when unfiltered air flows within them then they can become blocked quickly. 
• Ductwork Complications – if the debris and dust do not become stuck in the freon tubes then they can build up inside the ductwork. Moisture will increase and mould can easily form, flowing around the building.
